What it is
BuddhaPets sells calm to anxious dogs, restless cats and the people who live with them: deep-pressure beds, snuffle mats, slow feeders, fountains and calming treats. Fourteen pieces at launch, each chosen to earn a place in a routine rather than to sit in a basket as a novelty.
Most of what gets sold in this category is a one-off purchase with a promise attached. The brief was a store that sells the other thing — the routine that makes a product work — and earns trust before a single review exists.
Shop by ritual, not by shelf
The catalogue is grouped by what a product does in a pet’s evening, not by what aisle it would be in: Calm & Comfort, Slow Living, Zen Home and Together. Each collection explains the behaviour it is for before it shows a single price, so a visitor who arrived with a pacing dog leaves knowing why a snuffle mat helps, not just that one exists.
Decisions worth naming
- The quiz returns a plan, not a product list. Six questions about a pet’s stress signals, about two minutes, ending in a named Zen Plan. A recommendation engine that only ever answers “buy this” teaches people to ignore it.
- The Ritual Builder sells a set. Pick a comfort piece, an enrichment toy and a finishing touch, and the set price drops 15%. Every ritual ships with a printed evening-routine guide, because the routine is the product.
- Delivery estimates before checkout. Stock ships from overseas warehouses, so every listing shows an honest arrival window before anyone pays, not after.
- Rand first, other currencies on request. Prices are set in ZAR with a display switch for USD, EUR, GBP and AUD.
- The guarantee does the persuading. A 60-day Happy Pet Guarantee sits on every product, in place of claims about what a product will fix.
How it is built
A Next.js storefront with collection-led browsing, product pages at /shop/<slug>, the quiz and Ritual Builder, an FAQ and a journal. The journal is the store’s long game: articles on evening rituals, slow feeding and what the research says about calming ingredients, written to be found by the owners searching at eleven at night.
